In early 2001, we purchased our first registered dairy goats. We started off with an Alpine doe, and a Recorded Grade that was half Alpine and half LaMancha. At this time we had a few other goats, mostly brush goats, and were interested in a viable source of milk after owning a dairy cow did not work out well for our family. In May of 2001 we went and watched our very first show. After that we were hooked, in 2002 we began to show, purchasing a few more does. Our farm has grown much since then and so has our family. Possum Hollow is owned by Pam & Steve Hethcote, our youngest daughter; Chelsea has her own herd name (Fernwood Farm) and is very involved with her animals. Daughter-in-Law Rebecca began showing recently and now has a few does residing here of her own. Daughter Jane Ellen Tomlinson has four wonderful children, that all have their own goats and enjoy working with them. So for us, showing is not just for competition, it's also about having fun as a family. Aside from showing our animals, we also milk our does. We dam raise our kids, yet we keep them friendly and healthy. Our herd is TB & Bruc. free, and we strive to keep a healthy herd. Our does are turned out from their pasture daily to browse on about 60 acres of woods. As we are approaching our 11th year of showing our goats, we have had to good luck of being able to attend two national shows in this time, one convention, and have made many valuable friendships and love having the goats in our lives. |
